Sarva Pitri Amabasya Eclipse

and Durga Puja time!<!–

Sarva Pitri Amabasya

This New Moon is connected to the ancestors.  Every new moon night is indicated for the reverence of ancestors, but the 2 weeks leading up to this one is the fortnight every year where ancestors are most remembered.  If you would like to do an offering for your ancestors, today and tonight is the main timing, as this is when the veil between the worlds is thinnest.

Some possibilities are doing a small ancestor ritual. I recommend this website with online instructions to lead you through this if you feel inclined.  You can also remember them by a picture, a traditional food or drink, or anything else that strongly links you to them.

The window for this new moon is 9:09 am 10/1 (pacific time) to 11:45 am on 10/2.

This New Moon culminates with a solar eclipse.  This is the second of a series of 2 eclipses that began 2 weeks ago.  Though the eclipse is only visible in South America, eclipses are seen as inauspicious events that can make the mind unsteady.  It is advised to keep the mind calm and to not provoke any confrontation or upset, however that is often exactly what eclipses bring up.  Eclipses can also trigger prominent events that appear as strong disruptions or endings, but as it is said every ending is also a beginning.

So do your best to stay calm and unagitated during this 24 hour period.  Chant your mantra if you have one, and at very least avoid doing negative actions.  The maximum eclipse time is 11:45 am pacific on 10/2, so if there was one moment to observe most that would be it.

This New Moon and eclipse in the sign of Virgo and the lunar house Hasta reminds us to go inward.  The tendency of Virgo is to be critical, and Hasta is an expressive energy connected with the hands.  While expressing creativity through the hands is indicated in this window, we must resist the urge to find fault with or criticize external situation during this time, and especially remember not to act on them.  We can observe any strong emotions as they arise, feel them internally, and not blame external conditions for our feelings.  Mercury is in Virgo with these eclipse planets and as Mercury is the planet of communication the urge to express will be stronger.  I encourage you to choose your words carefully at this time.

On October 3rd, always following the Ancestor fortnight, begins Navaratri, the 9 nights of the Goddess Durga.  Our local temple has a live stream if you wish to join.  Navaratri celebrations are remarkable, and if you can attend a night or few in person I recommend it!

Blessings on these eventful nights and Happy Navaratri to all!
