We are entering a deeply significant passage of sacred time, where three powerful events of the Vedic calendar converge. Tonight is Sarva Pitṛ Amāvasyā, the “all-ancestors new moon,” which marks the culmination of Pitṛ Pakṣa, the fortnight dedicated to honoring our lineage and offering gratitude to all who came before us.

Tonight our prayers and simple acts of remembrance reach every ancestor and the veils between realms are especially thin, allowing blessings and healing to flow freely between generations. The most ideal time for this practice is the sunset of this new moon- the evening of Saturday September 20th in pacific time, and September 21st in Europe and Asia.

This Amāvasyā also coincides with a Solar Eclipse, amplifying the potency of the moment. Eclipses are considered times that favor inner work, when outer activities are set aside in favor of silence, mantra, and prayer. Rather than being times for ritualistic display, they invite us to go inward, to release what is no longer needed, and to prepare our minds and hearts for renewal. The joining of the eclipse with the ancestral new moon creates a potent opportunity for both purification and the healing of karmic patterns carried through the family line. The maximum eclipse moment in pacific time is 12:42 pm Sunday. This is a partial eclipse and not visible in most of the world except the east coast of Australia and New Zealand.  You can check timeanddate.com to find the time in your location.

Then begins Navarātri, the nine nights dedicated to the Divine Mother in all her forms. After the honoring of the past and the eclipse’s inward turning, Navarātri arrives as a fresh current of celebratory energy. Each of the nine nights represents a different form of the Goddess, who both destroys ignorance and nourishes us with strength and peace.

Together, these three events—Pitṛ Amāvasyā, the solar eclipse, and the commencement of Navarātri—form a continuum of remembrance, release, and rebirth. They remind us of the cyclical nature of time.  Over these days we move from remembering our ancestors, through the gateway of inner transformation, into a festival of renewal and empowerment.

May this sacred alignment bring peace to your heart and blessings to your path,

Mrin
