This New Moon culminates in sidereal Leo in the nakshatra of Purva Phalguni, joining Ketu in Leo and opposite Rahu in Aquarius. The New Moon begins September 9th at 10:03 pm Pacific time and culminates Thursday September 10th at 8:26 pm.
Leo is the sign connected with self-expression, creativity, confidence and the desire to shine. Ruled by the fiery yet steady Sun, it represents our sense of Self, both on level of the individual ego and the soul. Across from Leo is Aquarius, the seat of the last Full Moon eclipse, where we were called to step beyond our individual selves and consider our connection with the group or collective.
With this New Moon, we are again called to gather our energy inward. The Nodal axis (Rahu in Aquarius and Ketu in Leo) is still involved in this Moon, though this time without the added energy of an eclipse. We may continue to feel the tension between our desire for community and belonging and our need to remain true to our authentic selves.
Purva Phalguni is associated with Bhaga, the deity of prosperity and our inherited or rightful share of life’s blessings. It carries themes of pleasure, love, relationship, sexuality and creativity. Yet Ketu, though not in this nakshatra but still in Leo, can create dissatisfaction with the very things we seek to fulfill us. We may even find that what once brought enjoyment or validation suddenly feels empty or not quite as shiny as it once did.
This Moon holds particular relevance for those of us who feel pulled in many directions by the many hats we wear in this modern life. Beyond the roles of partner, parent, child, caregiver, friend and all the others, where does our own creativity and enjoyment exist? This New Moon invites us to question where our true ‘self’ and capacity for enjoyment live beyond our ego identities and the roles we play for others. Ketu can loosen our attachment to recognition, identity and possession, making room for a self expression that needs no external validated.
Rather than rushing to fill the void left in the wake of a New Moon, this one invites us to sit a little longer in the quiet discomfort that may arise when we question our familiar identities and roles. Within that quiet we may begin to see clearly what remains as meaningful and genuinely our own.
Love and Blessings,
Mrin
