This month’s New Moon comes in the wake of Shivaratri- Shiva’s great night of inner contemplation and spiritual penance. It is also an Eclipse in the sign of Aquarius and the nakshatra of Dhanishta. Eclipses occur at the culmination of the New Moon, this one reaching its maximum on February 17th at 4:12 am pacific time.

Though traditionally viewed as inauspicious, eclipses can also be understood as powerful turning points. They have the potential to interrupt our present ways of being and create a different circumstance- one that has often been lingering just under the surface and suddenly becomes impossible to ignore. In this way, although they may feel disruptive, eclipses are notorious for karmic ripening, which only becomes difficult if we are clinging to an outdated version how we believe reality should unfold.

The New Moon eclipse falls at 4 degrees of Aquarius. Aquarius relates to collective currents, our ideals and belief systems, and the structures that hold society together. Dhanishta is a prosperity Nakshatra, highlighting the dance between individual accumulation and shared resources. Its symbol of the drum, sometimes depicted as Shiva’s drum of creation and destruction, carries the cosmic rhythm, reminding us that true success arises when we move in harmony with divine timing. The occurrence of an eclipse here may reveal where we are out of sync with our own inner rhythm, or with the groups and commitments we participate in.

With five planets in on this eclipse- Sun, Moon, Rahu, Mercury, and Venus- all in the sign of the collective, Mercury soon going retrograde on February 25th, and Rahu’s unconventional energy leading the train, shocking or destabilizing events on the world stage could reveal themselves. We have already begun to see this in the weeks building up to the eclipse, as its influence can last for 3 months before and after the actual event.

Eclipses are not considered times for outward action or initiation, but rather for quiet observation, prayer, rest, and reflection. Heightened emotions and fatigue are common. If possible, keep your schedule gentle around the eclipse. Spend time in silence, meditation, journaling, or in nature for support.

Allow insights to arise naturally rather than forcing decisions. In the days that follow, clarity often emerges about what needs to be released or restructured. If we are simply witnessing what is presenting itself there is often no need to do very much at all.

As eclipses come in pairs, the next Lunar Eclipse occurs on March 3rd in the sign of Leo. More on that next time.

If I can help you navigate this eclipse cycle, please reach out to schedule a reading.

Love and Blessings, Mrin
