Happy Makar Sankranti!

Makar Sankranti marks the Sun’s entry into Capricorn (Makara) and is traditionally celebrated in India as the beginning of Uttarāyaṇa—the Sun’s northward journey and a turning toward light, clarity, and growth.

Astronomically, this northward movement actually begins at the Winter Solstice, when the Sun’s declination shifts and daylight slowly starts increasing. Makar Sankranti, then, is not the physical beginning of this change, but a symbolic and cultural moment that honors the Sun’s return in a visible, seasonal way.

In India, this time is closely linked to the harvest and the celebration of abundance. However, for many of us our land is still in the hibernation of winter. Though growing, the nights remain long, and nature is in a period of gestation rather than harvest.

So how do we honor this festival here?

Rather than celebrating what is being harvested, we honor what is being prepared.  Some simple Sankranti rituals can include lighting a candle or oil lamp to welcome the returning light, offering gratitude for what carried you through the darker months, and reflecting on what you are ready to cultivate in the months ahead.

Makar Sankranti reminds us that even when the Earth appears still, the movement toward light has already begun. This is a time to align with solar purpose, steady effort, and inner clarity, welcoming the growing light while respecting the season of rest that remains.

Love and Blessings,
Mrin
