Next Maha Mritunjaya Puja Wednesday<!–
Kartik Purnima
.
This Full moon begins on November 14th at 4:49 PM pacific and culminates at
1:28 PM pacific on the 15th, making the 14th the night when the moon is at its fullest. Though many of the full moons of the Vedic calendar hold significance, Kartik Purnima is considered one of the most special. It is a night primarily connected to Vishnu, and also a night of Shiva. It is a very peaceful night, as ‘acts of violence’ (including shaving, haircutting and even cutting flowers!) are prohibited.
It is observed as a day of fasting, and an ideal day to offer donations.
Particularly, this full moon is great for starting a new mantra or refreshing a mantra practice. What we do on this day has extra spiritual significance to multiply.
This year, this full moon is also aspected (looked at) by two malefic planets, Rahu and Saturn. This can indicate that the tendency may lean to more harsh or cold feelings and actions, which highlights the need to lean into positive action even more.
Mercury and Saturn
On November 15th Saturn goes direct after 4 1/2 months of being retrograde. Saturn is our slowest moving planet in Vedic Astrology (as Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are not utilized in classical Vedic Astrology) and therefore has a longer time of its apparent backwards movement. As Saturn is the planet of obstacles and delays, his retrograde movement in the sky gives a greater feeling of ‘stuckness’ or an inability to move forward. Saturn is also connected to hard work and discipline, and his retrograde period can hamper our ability to plan. Before Saturn goes direct there is a few days window where his movement is considered stationary. Before he begins to move forward on the 15th, now is a good time to observe where our own obstacles like lack of effort, avoiding responsibility, and even laziness have gotten in our way over these last few months. Saturn requires us to take personal responsibility and only then can we move forward into structures that will promote our success.
On November 25th Mercury goes retrograde and will remain until December 15th. Mercury retrograde is an approximately 3 week period a few times a year when the planet Mercury appears to be moving backwards in the sky. As Mercury rules communications, it is known as a time that can tend to miscommunications and misunderstandings.
The common advice is to put off major decisions, like signing contracts or beginning a new venture, until the period is over. On the other hand, it is the ideal time for the communication indications of Mercury to go inner. Editing written work, revisiting incomplete assignments, and reorganizing existing systems are all indicated in this window. If you do start something outward, be sure to check and double check it, as errors can be more common. Overall, it is a window known for minor inconveniences rather than the massive problems that are sometimes blamed on it!
Maha Mritunjaya Puja
Our next Mritunjaya Puja will be on Wednesday November 13th at 5 pm pacific.
First off, I was happy with the participation in the first puja, though we will be starting 30 minutes later to allow the priest more time to set up! After paying the priest more than he asked, I chose a health donation to give the additional funds. Both this puja and sponsoring someone’s medical expenses are remedies for the Sun. Each month I will chose an organization if there be extra. Last month the donation went to Operation Shanti in Mysore India to pay for a child’s medical expenses.
The Maha Mritunjaya Mantra fire ceremony is the most widely used ceremony for strengthening vitality and overcoming health issues.
The puja is open and free to all, a donation for attendance is appreciated but not required. While all will gain benefit from attending, the main benefit is reaped from those who name is given in the opening prayer. If you would like to have your name or someone else’s put in the healing intention you can offer a donation here and send me a message here with the name and nakshatra if you know it. The puja will be 3 hours long, and you are welcome to attend part or all of the ceremony.
Here is the zoom link for all who wish to attend.
As always, reach out if I can help you in any way,
Love and Blessings,
Mrinmoyee
