Tonight’s full moon marks Kartik Purnima, one of the most luminous and important nights of the Vedic lunar calendar.  In the US the full moon begins November 4th and lasts until 5:19 am pacific time on the 5th.

This is a night of both Vishnu and Shiva, which is a rarity as these two deities have distinctively different energies.  Shiva is the principle of simplicity and renunciation, and Vishnu represents bounty and service.  Symbolically, this full moon honors Vishnu’s victory of the preservation of knowledge, and in the Shaiva tradition it is the night Shiva triumphed over darkness.

This full moon is also considered as Deva Diwali, the Diwali of the Gods, where the divine descends down to earth.  It is said that even a small act of devotion today/tonight yields infinite merit and is equal to the fruits of all other months.

For this reason, it becomes a very important day to begin or renew a spiritual practice, or to do an act of service.  Not only does the merit increase for us, the amount of positive effect it has on others is multiplied as well. We can also simply light a lamp and say a prayer to the divine in any form that speaks to us in honor of this divine night.

So, if there is a practice or a charitable act that you have been considering doing or thinking to renew, today is the day!

Love and Blessings,

Mrin
