Happy Guru Purnima!

This Full Moon in Capricorn, which culminates on July 29th at 7:35 am pacific time is Guru Purnima, the sacred Full Moon of the Guru. This once-a-year observance falls on the Full Moon in the Vedic month of Ashadha and is the time to honor all of the teachers, mentors, guides and wisdom traditions in that have illuminated our path.  Today is the day we pause and offer them our heartfelt gratitude.

This year’s Guru Purnima is especially potent.  Jupiter, the planet that represents the Guru, higher wisdom, dharma, and grace is exalted in Cancer and conjoined the Sun, directly opposite the Full Moon.  This combination occurs only once every 12 years.  Even more rare, Jupiter is within one degree of the Sun, occupying the heart of the Sun, called Cazimi in astrological terms. While being too close to the Sun typically weakens a planet as it gets overwhelmed and overtaken by the Sun’s intense rays, a Cazimi planet gets exceptional strength, and brings Jupiter’s highest qualities into focus. Symbolically, the light of the Guru (Jupiter) is held withing the light of the Self (Sun), reminding us that while teachers may manifest outside us, the highest Guru is the one who awakens the light of Self and the wisdom that already resides within. This particular Guru Purnima invites us to honor those who have guided our journey while remembering that the ultimate purpose of every true Guru is to awaken that inner light.

So for this day, reflect on the people who have shaped your life.  Reconnect with your own spiritual practice, study a sacred teaching, or simply sit in gratitude for the all the countless ways that wisdom has found its way to you.

Om Gurave Namah

Love and Blessings,

Mrin
