This year, Ganesh Chaturthi falls on August 26th in the USA and Europe,
and August 27th in India.
Although every 4th lunar day (Chaturthi) of the moon cycle is dedicated to Ganesh, this one- the 4th day of the waxing moon in the month of Bhadrapada (August- September)- is the most important and celebrated as his birthday.
Ganesh is known as the remover of obstacles and the opener of doors. He is called upon at the beginning of any new venture, whether it is starting a journey, entering a new home, or beginning a project. His energy clears the way forward and helps bring success.
In India, families and communities welcome Ganesh by bringing home or creating clay images of him, decorating them with flowers, lights, and offerings of sweets. There are lively and colorful processions through the streets. He may be celebrated for 1 day only or for the next 10 days. At the end of the festival, the image of Ganesh is immersed in water, symbolizing both his return to the divine realms and the reminder that all forms eventually dissolve back into the formless.
Even without following traditional rituals, Ganesh Chaturthi can be a beautiful day to pause, clear space, and welcome new beginnings. You might light a candle or sit quietly and reflect on what obstacles you would like removed from your life.
You could offer something sweet with gratitude and think of it as a symbol of sweetness entering your path. And above all, we can invoke Ganesh simply by remembering him, chanting Gaṇapati Atharvaśīrṣa or by repeating his name in your heart.
Oṁ Gaṁ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ
Love and Blessings,
Mrin
