Guru Purnima- the Full Moon of the Gurus<!–

Happy Guru Purnima!

This Full Moon culminates on July 13th at 11:37 am PST and is known as Guru Purnima, the full moon dedicated to the Guru. Annually, Guru Purnima is celebrated when the full moon falls in Sagittarius.  Sagittarius is the natural house of the Guru of the zodiac, connecting it to teachers and wisdom of both the spiritual and earthly realms.  The lunar house of the moon this month is Uttarashadha, which means ‘later victory’ and is connected with success through perseverance.

This is the day we pay our respects to the Gurus and guides in our lives.  Traditionally, a Guru is one who has initiated you on the path to Enlightenment, but this day can be utilized to give thanks to any and all teachers who have given us knowledge. So be sure to remember and give respect to all the invaluable teachers in your life!

Mythologically, Guru Purnima is the day when Lord Shiva began giving teachings to the Saptarishis, the original ascended masters or seers, of the Vedic Tradition.

It is also known as the birthday of Sage Vyasa, who is known for dictating the Mahabahrata, an epic poem that not only tell a story but also describes ways of living in accordance with duty and higher principles.  Vyasa dictated this to Ganesh, who wrote it down with his tusk, which is why Ganesh is depicted with one broken tusk. The Mahabharata contains many living examples of the Guru- Disciple principle, which is the basis of the celebration of Guru Purnima.

May we all have the Grace to receive the blessings and teachings of the Gurus!
