Full Moon Eclipse

Today’s partial Lunar Eclipse occurs in the sign of Aries and the Lunar house of Ashwini.  This is the second of a series of eclipses that began on October 14th.  This eclipse cycle was particular because the first eclipse also aligned with the annual celebration of Navaratri, the 9 nights of the goddess Durga.  While eclipses are considered inauspicious events, Navaratri is one of the most blessed and celebrated times of the year.

The partial eclipse starts on October 28th at 12:35 pm pacific time and ends at 1:52 pm, with the maximum eclipse at 1:14 pm.  This will not be visible in the US, but is visible in Europe, Africa and Asia.  As this eclipse is only a 6% obscuration of the moon, even where it is visible it will look like only a small piece of the moon is missing.

Still, eclipses are considered inauspicious and it is not advised to look at them.  Eclipses are formed when Rahu or Ketu come in contact with the Sun or Moon (in this case Rahu and the Moon), and thus can cause unsteadiness of the mind, unrest and difficult emotions.  It is always advised to meditate, do a mantra practice, or activities that are not disturbing to the mind during the eclipse time.  It is said whatever we do in this window is magnified, so it is important to consider what we want to increase and focus on that in this timing.  If the eclipse is visible in your location, or if you are in a time period connected to Rahu or Ketu, or if you are generally feeling more chaos around you, observing this timing window becomes even more important.

There is a lot of unrest in the sky.  In addition to this eclipse series, Rahu and Ketu, are about to change signs, following their backwards movement through the zodiac- Rahu moves from Aries to Pisces, and Ketu moves from Libra to Virgo.  This is significant because they only change signs once every 1.5 years.  How this will affects you personally depends on their placement in your natal chart.  If you’d like some guidance on this shift reach out.

In western parts of India this full moon is Lakshmi Puja.  According to the mythology, Goddess Lakshmi comes to the earth and blesses those who have stayed up all night fasting and waiting for her. Lakshmi gives the blessings of wealth, health, fertility, fortune, abundance and beauty to those who pray to her.
