Basant Panchami

Happy Basant Panchami and Saraswati Puja!

Basant Panchami is the 5th day of the month of Magha and marks the beginning of spring in India. As many of us in the northern hemisphere are still cold it’s clear that the season scheme varies there and is in fact broken down into 6 seasons.  This differs a bit regionally as India has many different climates, but Basant Panchami marks the first spring ritual.

On this day most people worship Maa Saraswati, who is the Goddess of Learning. We ask Saraswati to bless us to be able to give us knowledge and intelligence.  As she is seen playing a veena, the stringed instrument in her hands, we are reminded that Saraswati helps us with all learning and transmissions of wisdom.   Fresh starts and new beginnings are themes of this day as well.  Some common rituals are also observed, like eating vegetarian food or feeding those less fortunate. Books we are studying, notebooks, pens and pencils, and instruments are all offered at her feet for her to bless our endeavors.

So however you choose to do it, give praise to the wisdom principle today!

Another cause of celebration is that on January 17th Saturn entered Aquarius after 2.5 long years in Capricorn.  As Aquarius is the sign that Saturn works better in, this is mostly a favorable transit.  As always, how it affects you personally will be seen by what house Aquarius is in your natal chart.
